LoL Subreddit Users Raise Over €5000 for Charity

The LoL subreddit has been overwhelmed with positive vibes this week after /u/AwesomePossumz shared his story. The ex-professional eSports player has been battling cancer and wanted to do something to help others. The sad tale had LoL subreddit users coming out in full force to support the player.

Tom Besemer, as he’s known in the real world, has undergone extensive treatment for the illness, with amputations and chemotherapy part of his experience. He stated that he knew the illness would continue to progress so he wanted to give back while he still could. The usually cynical LoL subreddit users quickly rallied round the player with encouragement and ideas.

Besemer embarked on a 24 hour LoL livestream for charity on the 16th of December. LoL subreddit visitors made up the majority of the watchers on the Twitch stream as they cheered him on through the stream. While 24 hours playing LoL might seem easy, there were definite moments when it seemed to take its toll. We can imagine that the first few hours would be fun but as time went on, it would get much tougher.

LoL subreddit fans and Twitch subscribers donated generously, with the final figure standing at over €5000. The money will go to the Prevent Cancer Foundation, a charity that helps with the early detection and treatment of the disease. Other eSports teams and minor celebrities donated goods for giveaways on the stream. This boosted the donations even further and even corporate sponsors got on board.

Team Roccat generously donated some of their bespoke hardware, which saw donations rising. This eSports team has also been nominated as the best LoL subreddit team account of 2016. We’re looking forward to seeing them in action again too, so stay tuned.

All in all, it’s a heart-warming story of one user with a passion for games making a real world difference.
